It's clear the internet is here to stay. Just think about how much we rely on it now compared to even just five or ten years ago. Our banking is online, our Ring cameras notify us when someone's at the door, and we can control our stoves, our heating and lights from our phones. Even our TVs are getting smarter with better picture quality! I think our dependence on this technology is only going to grow, and it's in our best interest to have a reliable foundation that can keep up with our needs as they evolve. The question is what's the right answer?
Staying open minded - Let's be careful not to let our frustrations with our current cable provider cloud our judgment. It's important to stay open and objectively explore these new opportunities. Can we really count on our current broadband provider to lead us into the future? Historically that hasn't been the case.
There are other options out there.
We've heard a lot about different satellite systems and phone providers. From my experience with DirecTV, the reception was often poor during storms, and that's something I wouldn't want to risk, especially when it comes to security systems or paying bills online. It’s reassuring to have something this important managed with municipal involvement, where we have a voice, more stability and oversight.
Now, about the financial side of things: This is a better product - But the approval to spend money here is a significant commitment. The cost to each user would be similar to our current plans if we manage to get enough connections. But what happens if we don't? Essentially, the town would be co-signing a loan. If we achieve a 50% take rate, we're in a good place. But if not, the taxpayers will bear the burden. I really wish we had a more thorough survey to give us a clearer picture of what to expect.
We need to bring our concerns forward to the committee to develop a product that benefits us well into the future. I hope to get answers to my questions soon and will post here.
